Financial Accounting Part 2 with Sar Sopheap

Rule students are now given opportunities to attend an extra skill-enhancement course on accounting in addition to their scheduled class. This course will move along with students' scheduled class in order for students to better understand the subjects.

Financial Accounting Part 2 will cover chapters that are taught in the classes. This extra course is designed mainly to enhance students'ability in financial accounting. However, students can choose to study Managerial accounting depending on their needs.

No registration fee is required for this course. Therefore, this course is free of charge only to RULE students. Students are required to have a textbook to attend the course.

This course is open only to undergraduate students at RULE. It will be held once a week and the schedule is as folllows:

Due to students' time congestion at 7 am, the course is rescheduled at 9:30 am (Room D34)

From an economist's perspective, making choices involves making decisions 'at the margin' - that is, making decisions based on small changes in resources:
How should I spend the next hour?
How should I spend the next dollar?

On the surface, this seems like a strange way of considering the choices made by people and firms. It is rare that someone would consciously ask themselves - 'How will I spend dollar number 24,387?', 'How will I spend dollar number 24,388?'. Treating the problem in this matter does have some distinct advantages:
Doing so leads to the optimal decisions being made, subject to preferences, resources and informational constraints.
It makes the problem less messy from an analytic point of view, as we are not trying to analyze a million decisions at once.
While this does not exactly mimic conscious decision making processes, it does provide results similar to the decisions people actually make. That is, people may not think using this method, but the decisions they make are as if they do.
Marginal Analysis - An ExampleConsider the decision on how many hours to work, as given by the following chart:

The hourly wage represents what I earn for working an extra hour - it is the marginal gain or the marginal benefit.The value of time is essentially an opportunity cost - it is how much I value having that hour off. In this example it represents a marginal cost - what it costs me by working an additional hour. The increase in marginal costs is a common phenomenon; I do not mind working a few hours since there are 24 hours in a day. I still have plenty of time to do other things. However, as I start to work more hours it reduces the number of hours I have for other activities. I have to start giving up more and more valuable opportunities to work those extra hours.It is clear that I should work the first hour, as I gain $10 in marginal benefits and lose only $2 in marginal costs, for a net gain of $8.By the same logic I should work the second and third hours as well. I will want to work until which time the marginal cost exceeds the marginal benefit. I will want to work the 10th hour as I receive a net benefit of #3 (marginal benefit of $15, marginal cost of $12). However, I will not want to work the 11th hour, as the marginal cost ($18) exceeds the marginal benefit ($15) by three dollars.Thus marginal analysis suggests that rational maximizing behavior is to work for 10 hours.

How to deal with insomnia

The sleep specialist. Try behavior changes and proper use of medication. At night, keep away from bright light. In the a.m., open the shades and go out for a walk, to tell your brain, “This is the start of the day.” You can try OTC sleep aids, but if you suffer for more than three weeks, see a doctor. Bottom Line

Don't underestimate the dangers of insomnia, including accidents from drowsiness. If you're overweight, sleep apnea could be the cause; even a 5% weight loss can reduce many symptoms. A combination of all the advice here offers the best chance to sleep robustly, but if you're still counting sheep, see a sleep disorders specialist for a diagnosis and advice on wise use of medications.

Thesis Defense

I am going to have a thesis defense this Saturday. Three professors on the committee will bombard me with questions, or possibly heavy criticisms about what I have written. Regardless, I am ready to take up a defensive stance against any challenging questions and criticisms. Yet, I am willing to listen to highly critical and helpful comments for the betterment of my future study.

I owe the success of my study and a substantial improvement in my academic personality to my most respected principal supervisor. Every time I made a presentation on the drafted thesis in the Zemi [A Japanese word for “Seminar” – we speak English in the Zemi], an argument usually arose between me and him. Thus, it didn’t sound like a presentation, but rather it was like a debate. He usually left room for me to explain to him reasons. Alongside, he also challenged me with many difficult questions through which my weaknesses could be realized. On that account, I have learned a lot from him. I sometimes felt like I was being educated in the Western-style environment in that Zemi although I have never experienced the Western education. All in all, his guidance style, in my opinion, has distinguished him from almost all the professors of the courses I have taken.

Whatever judgment he will make on me, I will unconditionally accept it because I am a responsible student. Throughout my academic life, I have never favored and will never tolerate the environment of either “always YES” or “always NO”. A combination of “YES and NO” has been and will always be shaping my academic life. Besides, I strongly believe that this combination will bring about tremendous improvements. Thanks to my professor, I have been given such a combination.

Cambodian Tribunal

On July third, a swearing-in ceremony was held for the judges and prosecutors who will serve on a tribunal to bring to justice the former leaders of the Khmer Rouge regime who face charges of genocide and crimes against humanity. Eleven judges from Cambodia and eight others nominated by the United Nations will hear the cases.
The agreement between the U-N and Cambodia to establish the Khmer Rouge Tribunal was made in 2004. The investigation phase is expected to take about six months. Trials are expected to begin in early 2007.
Helen Jarvis, the tribunal's media officer, says "Cambodians have been waiting for a whole generation for this day":
"People are just relieved that after so many delays we finally seem to be implementing what's been planned for so long."
When the Khmer Rouge took power in 1975, Cambodia had a population of over seven-million people. By the time that regime was overthrown in 1978, an estimated one-million-five-hundred-thousand Cambodians had perished.
The Communist Khmer Rouge targeted military and civilian leaders of the former government, ethnic minorities, intellectuals, physicians, teachers, and other professionals. Those who resisted or questioned orders were killed. The Khmer Rouge systematically emptied urban areas, forcing residents into the countryside, where they lacked food, agricultural implements, and medical care. Many died from malnutrition.
In Phnom Penh, the Cambodian capital, a former prison has been converted into a museum to document Khmer Rouge atrocities and educate Cambodians and foreigners about this terrible period of Cambodian history. Cambodia still faces many challenges, including poverty, lack of the rule of law, and corruption. "But," says Joseph Mussomeli, the U.S. ambassador to Cambodia, "looking back, it is genuinely remarkable how far Cambodia has come in so short a period. Cambodia's democracy, he says, "is still in its adolescence. It is barely fifteen years old. And considering its age," says Ambassador Mussomeli, Cambodia "has achieved a great deal that all Cambodians ought to take pride in."

What is being done to stop the international trade in people, victims who are subjected to forced labor or sexual exploitation? Some six-hundred-thousand to eight-hundred thousand people are trafficked across international borders each year, according to a U-S State Department report. An estimated eighty percent of those trafficked are female, and up to half are children. The majority of victims are forced into the commercial sex trade. Others are forced to work in factories or as household servants. Some children are forced to fight as soldiers. U-S Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice calls their exploitation a “modern-day form of human slavery.” Yet, she says, there has been some progress in the fight against trafficking.

The twelve countries with the worst records are Belize, Cuba, Venezuela, Zimbabwe, Sudan, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Iran, Uzbekistan, Burma, Laos and North Korea. Secretary of State Rice says that fighting human trafficking is the responsibility of every nation.
